What Faucet Repairs and Installations Do We Handle?
Tommy Bynum repairs the working parts of household faucets and replaces faucets that aren’t worth fixing. On the faucet itself, that means cartridges, washers, seats, O-rings, handles and aerators. Under the sink, it’s the supply lines and shutoff valves that feed it. We work on kitchen and bathroom sink faucets, the cartridges and handles on tub and shower faucets, and outdoor faucets on the side of the house. A sink that drains slowly is a drain cleaning call, and low pressure at every faucet in the house points to the pipes, which is a plumbing repair call.
Why Is My Faucet Dripping, Leaking or Losing Pressure?
A dripping faucet is almost always a worn cartridge, washer or seal inside it, water under the sink is usually a supply line or a loose connection, and weak flow at one faucet is usually the aerator or the cartridge. If water is running into the cabinet or the faucet won’t shut off, close the two shutoff valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then call (704) 825-4463. If a valve won’t close, shut off the water at the main. We take emergency calls 24/7.
| What you notice | What usually causes it |
|---|---|
| Drips from the spout with the handle off | A worn cartridge, washer or valve seat. The EPA says old, worn washers and gaskets frequently cause faucet leaks |
| Water pools around the base of the faucet or the handle | A worn O-ring or seal inside the faucet body |
| Water in the cabinet under the sink | A supply line, a shutoff valve or the connection to the faucet. If it's coming from the drain pipe, it's a drain repair |
| Weak or sputtering flow at one faucet | Grit caught in the aerator screen, or a worn cartridge |
| Weak flow at every faucet in the house | The supply pipes or the main line, not the faucets |
| Tub or shower drips after you turn it off, or swings between hot and cold | A worn cartridge or washer behind the handle |
| Outdoor faucet leaks inside the wall when you turn it on | Water froze in the faucet over the winter and split it |
Should You Repair or Replace a Faucet?
Repair it if the faucet body is sound and the problem is a cartridge, washer or seal, since parts for most faucets are easy to get. Replace it if the body is cracked or corroded, if parts for it are no longer made, if it keeps leaking after repairs, or if you simply want a new one. Age matters too: faucets made before 2014 were built to an older lead standard, and the median Gastonia home was built in 1979.
Gastonia's soft water changes the diagnosis
Hard water leaves mineral scale that clogs faucets, which is why most faucet advice blames “buildup.” Gastonia’s city water isn’t hard. The city puts its hardness at about 14 mg/L and says most people don’t need a water softener. So on city water, a faucet that loses flow usually has grit in the aerator or a worn cartridge, and cleaning or replacing those parts often restores it without a new faucet. If you’re on a well, or in a town with its own water system, the water may be different.
Faucets made before 2014 could contain more lead
Federal law once allowed the parts of a faucet that touch drinking water to contain up to 8% lead. The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, in effect since January 4, 2014, lowered that to a weighted average of 0.25%, according to the EPA. If an older faucet needs a major repair, that’s one more reason to replace it. When you buy a new one, look for a lead-free certification mark on the box, since manufacturers have had to certify since 2023.
Outdoor faucets fail inside the wall
A frost-free outdoor faucet is built so its valve sits several inches inside the wall, and the water drains out when you shut it off. A garden hose left attached keeps that water from draining, according to the manufacturer Woodford, and when it freezes, it splits the faucet inside the wall. You won’t see it until spring, when you turn the faucet on and water runs into the wall or crawl space. That faucet can’t be repaired, only replaced. Unhooking the hose before the first freeze prevents it.
How a Faucet Repair or Installation Works
Every faucet call follows the same order, and you get the price before any work starts.
The four steps
01. You tell us what the faucet is doing. We tell you what to shut off, whether it can wait, and when we can be there. If you’ve already bought a new faucet, tell us the model when you call.
02. We find the cause. We confirm which part failed before we quote.
03. You get the price before work starts. If the faucet is worth fixing, you get the repair price. If it isn’t, you get the repair and replacement prices side by side.
04. We fix or install it and test it. We check the shutoff valves and supply lines while we’re under the sink, then run hot and cold and check every connection for leaks before we leave.

Faucet Questions From Gastonia Homeowners
A faucet repair call starts with a $95 diagnostic. Ask about current offers when you call. Most repairs are one part and a short visit. A replacement depends mostly on the faucet you choose and on what’s under the sink, since shutoff valves that won’t close or old supply lines add work.
Many homeowners and handymen replace their own. What goes wrong is usually under the sink: shutoff valves that haven’t been turned in years and won’t close, or that start leaking once they’re moved, and supply lines that are overtightened or reused past their life. A leak there drips into the cabinet floor, where it’s easy to miss.
Almost certainly not. The EPA says a faucet dripping once a second wastes more than 3,000 gallons a year. The city’s leak adjustment policy requires a loss of at least 3,000 gallons above your average and covers no more than two billing periods. A frozen outdoor faucet that splits inside the wall is different: the city lists frozen and burst pipes and leaks in walls among the cases that get a 100% sewer credit. Apply within 60 days of the bill, with the plumber’s bill attached.
Yes. Most tub and shower drips come from the cartridge or washer behind the handle, and replacing it stops the drip. If the valve body inside the wall has failed, we’ll tell you what the repair involves before any work starts.
Unhook the garden hose before the first freeze, every year. If your house has an older outdoor faucet with a separate shutoff valve inside, close that valve and open the outdoor faucet to let it drain.
